The Report reveals that online gambling has grown by 40%, which means around 3.2 million new users have discovered online gambling in 2009 where as social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter has only seen 2.2 million extra users last year.

Party Casino released figures that showed that their player membership has increased by 360% which acts as an amazing example for the growing popularity of online casinos. Another online gambling site that benefited by this surge of new players is Party Poker, which has witnessed a rise in the number of people who registered with them. Their figures show that the increase is a staggering 174% with 870,000 extra player registrations.

The Neilson Report also suggests that the global financial crisis experienced in the past couple of years has forced a change in the way of gambling, leaving more people opting for online casinos. It also shows that the people who played online mostly were from the minimum income section or retired. But the trend has changed as more and more middle aged people are discovering online casinos. Middle-aged men seem to be influencing the rise in online casino participation.

A problem gambling charity GamCare has also stated that it is concerned that the popularity of online gambling may have an effect on young people who tend to get carried away by how easy it is to access online gambling.
