Gambling has been a part of human history for centuries. Gambling activities date as far back as 2000 BC in ancient China and India. Every civilization has shown records of some of gambling or the other. But despite the ancient history of gambling, land based casinos have been in existence for only less than 500 years. The first land based casinos are believed to have existed in Italy. They were gambling clubs that were came up around the 17th century. These were private clubs that were owned and organized by wealthy aristocratic Italians.
The places where the gamblers would meet were summer houses or villas and they were called ‘casa’. The word casino comes from casa. Soon regular folks also began to indulge in such gambling activities and casinos began to pop up all over Italy. Later gambling became illegal in Italy and was frowned upon. But land based casinos had become so popular by that time that they eventually became legal. In the US the first gambling houses were saloons. They were small dingy places and the first one was set up in 1882 on the border of Colorado and Utah. Brown’s saloon, as it was called, catered to miners who were working in the local mines. Many other saloons came up in trading cities like San Francisco, Chicago, St. Louis and New Orleans. Traders would meet up after work and gamble and drink together. In those years steam boats on the Mississippi River were also centers for gambling.
Nowadays the best land based casinos in world are not in Glasgow or anywhere else in Scotland… sorry… but in Vegas and Macau.
